The World Council of Churches (WCC) Central Committee has decided upon the theme for its 11th Assembly, to be held in Karlsruhe, Germany in 2021. “Christ’s love moves the world to reconciliation and unity” will be the theme used in development of programmes and other preparations.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) Assembly Planning Committee (APC) is meeting in Cyprus from 9-16 January to develop central building blocks of the WCC 11th Assembly. The APC will also discuss the allocation of seats, input to the spiritual life of the assembly, communication strategies and the local programme.

Throughout its planning, the APC continues to consider gifts and lessons from previous assemblies. The WCC 11th Assembly will be held in 2021 in Karlsruhe, Germany. During the meeting this week, the APC will receive updates from the WCC Central Committee and the WCC Executive Committee, a logistical report from visits to Karlsruhe; and a report on preparation from the German churches.

“The theme will help to focus on the ecumenical movement as a movement of love, seeking to follow Christ and witness to Christ’s love – expressed in the search for justice and peace, and unity based on that,” commented WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit and added “The one human family needs love and needs to love to face our future together.”

The WCC ask for prayers for the APC, and for the churches and partners in its fellowship as it begins to prepare for and to move towards the next assembly.

The assembly is the “supreme legislative body” of the WCC, and meets every eight years. The formal purpose of the assembly is to review programmes and determine the overall policies of the WCC, as well as to elect presidents and appoint a Central Committee which serves as the chief governing body of the WCC until the next assembly.
